Well we knew it was coming! Some very frosty scenes this morning, showing the beautiful seed heads (which we leave for food and protection) with their winter coat! Slightly tricky for planting but the sun still has enough warmth to thaw & a thick layer of compost around bases will give them a good start. After a few winter (& summer) batterings these beautiful Gaze Burvill "Cloister" benches and occasional tables gave now been restored to their original loveliness by the designers. They're now positively glowing after their makeover!

These hydrangea paniculata limelight were only planted this year but have shot up and produced an enormous quantity of giant blooms in that time. The flowers start off a vibrant creamy white (very wedding) then turn pink tinged as summer progresses. A real asset to the garden. These terraced borders go through so many different colours as the seasons progress. Spring was full of purples and blues, early summer saw lots of pinks and now white and green are dominant. It's tolerating the drought really well - organic mushroom compost has been its friend! It provides food, encourages worm movement and most importantly (at the moment!) provides protection for roots against the heat and stops the soil from drying out. The drips of water it gets are kept well below the reach of the sun which prevents it being wasted through evaporation.

The dahlia. Such a trooper at this time of year. Doesn't mind being a bit hot or a little dry, keeps on and on flowering (more if you keep cutting!) and looks gorgeous in borders and vases. Wordsworth missed a trick. Originally from mainland Europe & the Middle East the snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis - Latin for "milk flower of the snow") wasn't seen wild in the U.K. until the late 18th century, when it escaped from gardens and naturalised in woodland in Gloucestershire. They were traditionally used as a remedy for headaches (don't try this at home folks!) but are now used for the galantamine they produce, in the treatment of Alzeimer's disease.
